We Are the Cavalry: How You Can Take Control of Our Government

Hey there! I want to talk to you about something I've learned during my 14-15 years in the Utah State Legislature: fixing the government isn't about politicians—it's about you.

When I first ran for office in 2010, I had high hopes of working with colleagues to solve the big problems. What I quickly learned is that we can't wait for someone to save us—there's no cavalry coming. But here's the good news: We are the cavalry.

It’s up to us to take control of our government and make it work the way it was meant to.

The reason I came back to the legislature, after briefly stepping away, was because I realized that we have to figure out how to solve these problems together. And here's the thing—

we can do it if we step up and take responsibility.

Government Is Like a Two-Year-Old

Let me share a little story. I’ve got a grandson, and like any two-year-old, you have to watch him every second or he’s going to make a mess. Well, government is just like a two-year-old—it will make a mess

if we’re not paying attention. The framers of the Constitution knew this, and that’s why they designed our government with checks, balances, and limits.

If we're not watching government every second of every day, and it makes a mess, it's not government's fault—it's ours.

Just like with a two-year-old, it’s in the nature of government to grow and overreach. So, we need to be constantly involved, making sure it stays in check.

The National Debt Crisis: A Mess We Must Face

Right now, our government is spending more than we can sustain. Our national debt has ballooned to over $35 trillion, with interest payments over a trillion dollars a year. Even Congress admits it’s the #1 threat to national security. They all signed off on that statement in March 2024, but their solution? “We’re going to try harder.”

Does that make you confident? Probably not. And it shouldn’t. Instead of cutting waste, we see things like millions spent on absurd projects: studying male prostitutes in Vietnam or producing failed Super Bowl commercials. Meanwhile, our spending outpaces revenue by$2 trillion every year, forever. Imagine running your business like that—it wouldn’t last a month. This happens because Washington, D.C. is completely parasitic. Corporations are making 6,000%–78,000% return on investment by lobbying for subsidies and monopolies, and nine of the ten wealthiest zip codes in the country are in or around D.C. They’re draining power from the states and selling influence at an alarming rate. We can do it if we step up and take responsibility.

Who’s the Boss? You Are!

But here’s the thing: we are the boss. It’s up to us to take the reins and steer this ship in the right direction. Our Founding Fathers were crystal clear about this. Let’s take a look at some of their wisdom:

James Wilson said, “The dread and redoubtable sovereign has been found where he ought to have been found—in the free and independent man. This truth...may be appreciated as the first and fundamental principle in the science of government.” Translation: You are sovereign. You have supreme power over government.

Thomas Paine put it this way: “The Constitution is not an instrument for the government to restrain the people. The Constitution is the instrument for the people to restrain the government.” It's not about limiting you; it's about you limiting them.

George Mason said it best when he declared, “All power is derived from the people. We need to wear that as our breastplate and buckle it on as our armor.”

These quotes remind us that the people—the average citizen—are the ones who hold the power, but we need to act like it.

Start Small: Five Minutes a Week

Now, you might be thinking, “Okay, this sounds big, but what can I do?” Here’s the simple truth: you can make a difference in as little as five minutes a week.

Spend a few minutes getting involved, writing to your representatives, or even learning about the basic principles of our government. Vince Lombardi started every football season by saying, “Gentlemen, this is a football.” It’s about returning to the fundamentals, and that’s exactly what we need to do with our government.

The Fine Print

Here’s the fine print: you don’t get a week off. Ever. Not on your birthday, not when you’re on vacation, not when life is busy. You need to stay engaged, even if it’s just for a few minutes a week. But, together, if we commit to this, we can restore balance and order.

Wrapping Up: What’s Next?

So, what does it mean to “act like the boss”? It’s not about being pushy or confrontational—it’s about being informed, engaged, and ready to cooperate with others in the spirit of service.

You’re the boss

of this system, but to make it work, we have to lead with knowledge, responsibility, and a willingness to work together.

In the next blog, I’ll share some practical tips on how you can start doing this today—without alienating people but fostering cooperation in the spirit of service. Thanks for reading, and I appreciate your involvement in this journey to reclaim our government. Let's work together and make it happen! Stay tuned for more!

Are You Worried About America? Are You Concerned for the Future of Your Children/Grandchildren? Have You Ever Thought … There’s Nothing I Can Do? What if You Could Make a Difference? What If YOU Are the Only One Who Can? What If it would only take as little as 5 minutes a week [to begin fixing the governing mess we are in]?

American Government is NOT a spectator sport!

The first principle in the exceptional structure of American government is that the People are sovereign. This means We, the People, are the “boss” of this governing enterprise. However, any organization is eventually destined to fail when the “boss”

(i) only shows up once in a while,

(ii) doesn’t know the skills and abilities of the employees,

(iii) doesn’t provide them with the job description, and

(iv) seldom follows up to see how they are doing

So, the “bad news” is that WE, the People, are responsible for the mess that is American government today…!

But, the “good news” is that We, the People, are responsible for fixing this mess that is American government today and leaving for our children and grandchildren a country that is back on the path to liberty, peace, and the pursuit of happiness

And, the best part is, together we can restore governing balance in America … in as little as 5 minutes a week!!

President Ronald Reagan once said: “There are no easy answers, but there are simple ones.”

The simple answer is...

that each one of us is responsible for selecting and sustaining state leaders who understand, and will exercise, their constitutional duty to preserve and maintain this balance and allocation of powers central to the structure of our government. Self-government is not a spectator sport! To the degree the American People do not exercise this right (and responsibility), the power vacuum will be filled by others with self-serving motivations.

Image

Compound Republic

To secure these rights of the American People, the Framers created an unprecedented structure of government. This singular structure of government divides governing power delegated by the People between two distinct governments, national and state. (The Framers describe this unique structure of government as a “Compound Republic.” Federalist No 51). This structure of government is characterized and preserved by a meticulous allocation and balance of governing powers and responsibilities between State and National governments. It is this balance and “fragmentation of power” that is “central to liberty” and to securing the rights of the American People. NFIB v. Sebellius, (2012, Justice Scalia dissent).

Image

Oath to Uphold

The legitimacy of each government in this federal structure is sustained only to the extent this balance and allocation of governing powers and responsibilities is vigilantly guarded and preserved. The legitimacy of our governing structure is directly undermined to the degree this balance and allocation of powers is not scrupulously guarded and preserved. All state and national officials take office by oath to uphold this constitutional structure. (Article VI, U.S. Constitution). l begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more.

Image

Primary Constitutional Responsibility

It is the responsibility of the States, and state officials, to restrict and restrain the national government to the balance and allocation of powers and responsibilities delegated to it. Only the States have the ability (and the constitutional duty) to check and restrain the national government to the powers delegated to it. This is the primary constitutional responsibility of state officials. This is their number one job. All else in our federated system is contingent upon this balance

Acting Like the "Boss" Again

Restoring Governing Balance & Securing Our Rights

In our America, it is up to self-governing Americans to select and sustain the state leaders who understand their primary job is to restore and maintain the allocation and balance of governing powers between the national government and the states which secures our Life, Liberty, Property and Pursuit of Happiness. We are “the boss” in our governing enterprise.

Like any ongoing concern, if “the boss” doesn’t mind the store, the consequences affect the entire enterprise. Fortunately, the recipe for restoring and maintaining governing balance is simple (though not necessarily easy).

For most Americans, they don’t realize they are the sovereign (the boss) of our governing enterprise and they have never been exposed to the rights and responsibilities of self-government.

Many American are concerned about our government and simply don’t realize the solution rest with them. Exposed these basic truths about our unique governing structure, many Americans will be disposed to take simple actions to exercise their self-governing responsibility.
